new moleskin portrait

This is of my second oldest daughter when she was around 3. My niece's project is looking for a girl around that age, so I'm trying to give her a couple of different looks.

Finished one...

Okay, got one finished. Hoping my niece will like to use it for her project. I'm trying not to get too attached to it for her project. I have learned from past experience that the client isn't always excited about what you produced. Sometimes their vision is so strong that it can be hard to please them. But I like how it turned out and if she doesn't like it, I may still put it on a larger surface. The reference photo is of my oldest when she was about 3 or 4.

Inspiration Wednesday: Family

My inspiration this week comes from my family. Like I mentioned in yesterday's post a couple of relatives have been waiting on me to complete some artwork that they requested. So I'm using their commissions to get me out of my creative funk. It's working, because I'm really excited to get painting on these. I'm working on them in my moleskin journal first, then get their input before moving on to a larger surface. What do you think?

Back-to-school drama...

In case you've been wonderin' where I've been these past few weeks, here's an update: I've been getting my kids ready for school. Well, not in the traditional sense. I homeschool my kids, so I needed to review materials purchased, return what I didn't like, replace items, check out items from the library, get supplies stocked, read material, make a plan, and execute it. It has been quite an ordeal I tell ya! It doesn't help much that I'm a big procrastinator and get easily distracted, but we're up in running. They were dragging their feet two weeks ago, so I had to do a little boot camp last week to get us back in the game.

Creatively, I have done very little. I did a couple of paintings over the weekend which I wasn't too happy with. I haven't really completed anything new artwise.

I have completed a couple of crochet hats. My sister called me last week to remind me that I owed her some crochet slouchy hats. I crochet some for her earlier this year but they were either too big or too small. I'll have to see how these will fit her.

I am about to start on two projects that my sister-in-law and niece asked me to do. They've been asking me to these for a while, but I put it off. That procrastinator thing again. Luckily, they love me and understand. But since I'm creatively frustrated, having something to work on to keep the juices flowing is what I need. I'll try to show my process as the work moves along.

Inspiration Wednesday: Art Marketing & Creativity

This week's inspiration is quick and to the point. I've been researching art licensing and came across Alyson Stanfield's blog, ArtBizBlog. The focus isn't on art licensing, but on marketing your art period. She has a ton of great, right-t0-the-point articles on how to successfully market your art. She is also author of the book, I'd Rather Be in the Studio: The Artist's No Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion.It is on my wishlist.

I also stumbled upon Nate Williams' illustration blog. He has some great post on starting a illustration career and creativity. It's an all-around cool site and definitely one to bookmark!
